Guerrilla Storytime at ALA Midwinter 2014!

Yep, it’s happening: Guerrilla Storytime at the 2014 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia!

If you’re going to be attending the Midwinter Meeting, make plans to visit the Networking Uncommons in the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Sunday, January 26, 2014, between 2 and 3 p.m. That’s the slot we’ve reserved for Guerrilla Storytime, and we’re hoping as many librarians as possible can participate! I (Amy) will be hosting with my Guerrilla Storytime Challenge Cup, but Guerrilla Storytime is collaborative to the extreme, so who knows where the afternoon will take us?

In case you need a refresher, Guerrilla Storytime is Cory’s brilliant idea for grassroots storytime training and advocacy. Youth services librarians gather for Guerrilla Storytime, and with the combined cup of  challenges and the curiosity of attendees, we all learn new songs, great stories, and expert skills to make our storytimes even better than they already are. We’re training each other, which makes so much sense because each and every youth services librarian has valuable expertise from which others can learn and grow. Since Guerrilla Storytime takes place in a public space–in this case, the heart of the conference, the convention center–non-youth services librarians have the opportunity to peek in and see what it is that we YS folks actually do. It can come as a surprise that storytime isn’t “just reading to kids,” and that’s the exact sort of reality check we aim to provide through Guerrilla Storytimes. Youth services is demanding and hard, and it deserves the respect of the entire profession.

Are you a Philly-area librarian who will be attending the conference? If you’d like to help a girl out by bringing egg shakers, a parachute, scarves–really, any storytime accoutrement that I can’t realistically stuff in my luggage–we Storytime Underground joint chiefs will be forever in your debt. Just comment on this post or tweet at me (@amyeileenk) if you can help bring a storytime supply to Guerrilla Storytime at Midwinter.

See you in Philly!

  5. I’ll be volunteering at the Uncommons during that time, so I’m really excited for this! Let me know if you need anything aside from props (I have a small suitcase, too).
